Photos of this installation and the C-8500 are on the Canadian Science and Technology Museum¬ís web site under Communications and Computers ¬ñ Image CN000012. The disk measures 99 cm in diameter and weighs approximately 30 pounds. It was one of 5 installed in a cage assembly in the C-8500 and spun at a fairly high rpm. The disk is ceramic and has 64 Kbytes of capacity and was written using a hydraulic head assembly. Some evidence of disk crashes can be seen in the ceramic facing. I am not sure as to when the C-8500 was initially commissioned but photographs on your web site are dated 1968. The C-8500 was leased by the Canadian Weather Service and used as a teletype (110-600 baud) switching computer for the collection and distribution of Canadian and international weather data. As Head of National Networks for Environment I ordered the decommissioning of the C-8500 in the late1980s and was given this disk as a memento (Ref. 3). Medium upon which data and instructions were recorded in the memory device of a main frame computer. The latter was used as a teletype switching computer for the collection and distribution of weather data. A large ceramic disk for storing data part of the first Collins computers in Canada and one of only 12 at the time in North America (the rest being mainly in the US military). This computer was first used by CN/CP and then leased to Weather Canada to process weather data (Ref. 1). The Bryant disc drives used with the Collins C-8500 series of computers were essentially the same as those used with its predecessor the 8400-series; they first appeared around 1964. At the time of their introduction they were the largest-capacity moving-head disc stores in existence. The photographs (2007.0224.si1 to 2007.0224.si19) attached to this record are of Disc File 3 one of the last two 8871A-1 units remaining in use at the CNCP Telecommunications Computer Switching Centre (CSC) located at 151 Front Street West in Toronto. The other unit Disc File 6 can be seen in the background of some of the pictures. The last two "big discs" were scheduled to be de-commissioned on 22 November 1987; they were supplanted by 96-megabyte Data General "Zebra" disc drives which were interfaced to the Collins C-8500 through a Data General Eclipse S/120 minicomputer which emulated the timing buffering and electrical interface characteristics of the 8871s (Ref 2). The Scrambler was primarily intended for the American market. It underwent continual modification until 1968 when the true Scramblers with "wide-casing" engines were brought out first in the 250 and 350 versions and then in 1969 the 450. The Scrambler series included a few bikes with Desmo cylinder heads and was subjected to continual technical adjustment right up until 1974 when production was halted. The reasons for the Scrambler's commercial success were manifold. It had an excellent frame (it was even used for track racing which is probably unprecedented in motorbike history) and an engine perfectly suited for its function. It was not the fastest bike of its day but its general performance and absolutely centered riding position made it one of the most delightful machines of the era. It was moreover extremely stylish: rounded lines simultaneously classical and modern and bright colors contrasting with the black running gear and chrome gas tank. GENERAL TRANSPORTATION The Scrambler had a Simplex open cradle tubular frame full width drum brakes its front suspension was hydraulic telescropic forks and its rear suspensin was a swinging arm with adjustable shocks. Weyburn Mental Hospital in Weyburn SK opened its doors in 1921 and closed (as the Souris Valley Hospital) in 2005. From the 1940s to 1971 it took part in controversial treatments for mental illness including lobotomy and electro shock therapy. It was also famous for its pioneering experiments with LSD in the 1950s and 60s. Dr. Humphrey Osmond who coined the term "psychedelic" performed several experiments with patients and university students. In its heyday the Weyburn was a well-equipped self-sufficient health facility. Some complained that it was even better equipped than the local hospital. This x-ray machine [system component] would have been the workhorse for the institution. It was still in use after the building shut down a few years ago. It does not have direct ties to the more controversial history at Weyburn but in colour and design mirrored the institutional interior of Weyburn. Much of the old equipment and supplies went to developing countries when the shut-down occurred and some went to the University of Regina theatrical department. [Ref. 1]   Element of durable x-ray fluoroscopic machine used for many purposes. It was part of a new generation of fluoroscopic technology following the invention of large image intensifiers in 1953. With these photomultiplier tubes ordinary movie cameras could capture the moving pictures of the fluoroscopic images. Contrast agents such as barium would have been used to see bodily processes in real time. {ref. 1] Medical Technology Radiology Radiation equipment             metal 329.5 98 78       http://source.techno-science.ca/artifacts-artefacts/images/2009.0068.008.aa.cs.png http://source.techno-science.ca/artifacts-artefacts/images/2009.0068.008.aa.cs.thumb.png

They produced their first motorbike in 1902 and it was followed by a variety of machines ranging from a 225 cc two-stroke to 500 cc four-valve singles. During the First World War Triumph Motorcycles sold more than 30 000 of its Triumph Type H model to allied forces. In 1936 Triumph came under the same ownership as the Ariel company and a new designer Edward Turner from Ariel was appointed. Turner updated many of the existing designs and was responsible for Triumph's most significant creation the Speed Twin that became the basis for Triumph's bikes until the 1980s. This model had a short life for the BSA group was in serious financial trouble and the problems at Small Heath soon brought production to an end. GENERAL TRANSPORTATION New versions of Triumph singles were launched for 1971. The Blazer was a BSA clone and was produced at Small Heath but had its origins in the original Triumph Terrier. It was nearly identical to the T25T Trail Blazer Trail Bike as both had the same 247 cc engine. The front forks matched the group's (see tradelit L05360) slimline type with four-stud fixings to the wheel spindle caps internal springs and no gaiters. The wheels front and rear had conical hubs and the back on contained a single-leading shoe brake and was supported in an 18 in. rim. The T25SS had twin-leading show brakes with short cam levers that were pulled together by cable on its front wheel. Most other parts were common to both models and these included the exhaust system. The pipe for this curled along the right side of the engine to pass inside the frame tube where it joined a lozenge-shaped silencer. This ran up an angle to terminate with a high-level tailpipe and both this and the main body had perforated heat shields attached to them. The mudguards did differ with the road model (this artifact) having the front guard held close to the wheel by wire stays that were rubber-mounted to the lower fork legs. On the trail bike the guard was attached to the bottom fork crown and sat away from the tire. The flue pan and syrup pan are made of #304 stainless steel in 20 and 22 gauge (according to mfr's specifications). Wood fired arch and frame made of cast metal. Agriculture Cottage industries Maple syrup             metal->stainless steel 940 97 92       http://source.techno-science.ca/artifacts-artefacts/images/2013.0101.001.aa.cs.png http://source.techno-science.ca/artifacts-artefacts/images/2013.0101.001.aa.cs.thumb.png

14997 1973.0514.001 Snowmobile   TNT440/EVEREST 3408-00360 Bombardier Ltd. Canada Qu√©bec Valcourt 1973       1   In August of 1973 the one millionth Ski-Doo rolled off the assembly lines at the Bombardier plant in Valcourt. Management and staff at Alpine Distributors along with local dealers and snowmobile racing champions gathered at a reception at Alpine and along with over a dozen distributorships across Canada and the U.S. listened in on a telephone conference from Valcourt. At Alpine the call was amplified through a public address system and those present heard federal politicians and Bombardier president Laurent Beaudoin toast the production of the millionth Ski-Doo. A stretched track 1974 T'NT Everest model the one millionth was presented to Mrs. Yvonne Bombardier widow of the inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier for display in the J.A. Bombardier Museum in Valcourt. The one millionth and one machine was presented to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. The one millionth and two machine was set aside for Bombardier president Laurent Beaudoin and the one millionth and third machine was sent out to Alpine Distributors in Vernon. (ref.2) For travel over snow. For commemoration purposes. In addition to special promotional feats there were opportunities to promote Ski-Doos by entering them into snowmobile races which were gaining popularity in the 1960s. There was a lot of media coverage to be captured by a good showing at any one of the bigger contests such as the World's Championship Snowmobile Derby at Eagle River in Wisconsin. In 1968 Bombardier scored some victories on this front after it introduced the vertical-twin Rotax 600 cc the first engine its Austrian engine supplier had designed expressly for the Ski-Doo. The Ski-Doo model containing this engine was called the Track N' Trail (or TN'T) because it was designed to compete on the racetrack and be a hot performer on the trail. (ref.3) "A prototype Everest was tested on Silver Star Mountain and on Hunter's Range above Enderby. Because the Everest was designed to climb in powder and scale backcountry terrain it was outfitted with a wide 16.5-inch track and provided 907.5 square inches of flotation. The chassis and track measured five inches longer than the standard T'NT models. The Everest track was not just wider but replaced the traditional steel reinforcing rods with lighter more flexible fiberglass rods. Steel was replaced with aluminum for the tunnel though there was a steel reinforced bulkhead to hold the engine and ski mounts." 101367 2008.1485.001 Sheet press Red off-white and green text and graphics printed on paper. Carnation Evaporated Milk/Carnation Milk Products Co. Ltd.   Unknown Unknown             1 Red off-white and green text and graphics printed on paper. Many of the plates proofs labels and posters were produced for Canada's growing number of manufacturers in everything from farm implements to preserved food pharmaceuticals and musical instruments. Some of these like Massey Harris were once giants. Others may have left no other traces than the plate and proof for a cheque receipt or letterhead. The artifacts and print specimens represent the output of one of the fastest growing industries in this period: printing and graphic arts. Not only was printing growing rapidly as a sector it was also subdividing into specialized segments. The engraving and lithography trades whose processes excelled at reproducing creative imagery colour and decorative calligraphy commanded the market for stationery packaging posters promotional calendars and catalogue covers. The collection attests to the emergence of a new market consumer goods and a new industry advertising. During this period the role of the household as a centre of production was steadily weakened as its members became implicated in the labour market. As members became increasingly dependent on cash employment household needs like clothing and food had to be met by purchasing goods. At the same time manufacturers pressed by competition continually sought both to expand their markets and reduce their costs through mass production. National markets for consumer goods thus emerged. The printing and publishing industry played a key role in this process through advertising and packaging. 107497 2015.0007.001 Snowmobile   Yamaha Sno Sport   Yamaha Motor Corporation Japan   Hamamatsu 1990       1 White Paint Red Seat Motorized snow vehicles have a long history in Canada and many other northern countries beginning in the early 20th century. These vehicles which date from 1968-1993 represent a variety of themes in the history of the snowmobile in Canada. Yamaha designed the Sno Sport for the adolescent market. Small and light than a full sized snowmobile it was easy to move and operate. Yamahas goal was to attract new riders to the sport by giving them a machine that they could learn on but would quickly outgrow. Even today on snowmobile websites many commentators share their fond memories of these vehicles and suggest that there is still a market for this type of junior snowmobile. Recreational snowmobiling and snowmobile racing Its 123cc 1 cylinder engine provided plenty of power for the younger rider. The Yamaha Sno Sport was offered for two model years 1990 and 1991. While these models are very similar they do have different air boxes and cooling duct work for the engine. The Sno Sport serial number is located on the outer side of the right running board tube and follows a format of 87A-000000 where the frist two numbers or the serial number are not the actual year of the machine. The Sno Sport serial number key is as follows: 87B - 1990 with electric start; 87A - 1990 with kickstart; 88B - 1991 with electric start; and 88A - 1991 with kickstart. This model has an 87B-000616 serial number which means it was built in 1990 and has an electric start.
